Ecu Remapping

What is re-mapping?

ECU remapping is basically the modern term for what used to be known as “chipping” in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

All vehicles manufactured after 1999 are fitted with an onboard computer called an “Electronic Control Unit” (E.C.U). The ECU monitors and controls the ignition timing, fuelling, air intake and boost pressure of an engine, and its parameters are pre-programmed from manufacture.

The program installed by the manufacturer is set to allow for build tolerances into their engines and to over comply with emission standards. It is also set to withstand operation in extreme environments, cope with sub-standard fuel quality found in some countries and allow for some owners’ sub-standard service intervals and driving.

ECU remapping a vehicle re-programs the parameters within the ECU and the outcome is a much more responsive, fuel efficient and smoother running vehicle. The ECU remapping procedure may sound very complicated to some, and does indeed utilise extremely advanced technology, but in principle is very simple.

What exactly is involved in re-mapping?

First we will need to plug our specialist equipment into your vehicle’s ECU port or socket. This is usually found underneath the dashboard or under the bonnet in the engine bay. Once plugged in, our equipment reads the ECU and downloads a computer file containing the relevant data needed to ascertain how the vehicle is currently performing. Then the file is analysed and a new file containing totally new parameters is uploaded to the ECU and hey presto!

All immobiliser and chassis information is safely retained upon this procedure.

We feel it is also important to mention that, all of our remaps are custom written on the day, are 100% unique to each individual vehicle that we carry out work on, and not ‘off the shelf’ pre-programmed ‘problem files’ that so many companies do use.

Does a vehicle need to be fitted with a turbo to benefit from a re-map?

No. Although a vehicle fitted with a turbo system will benefit the most, a normally aspirated engine can also benefit from up to a 15% increase in power with careful adjustments within the vehicle’s ECU.

How long does it take?

This can take anything from a day or two, depending on the make and model of the vehicle.
